What to do right now

Find your torch if it is dark. Check your fuse box to see whether a breaker has tripped. Check whether your neighbours have lost power too. Check or report the outage using 105. Keep fridge and freezer doors closed. Switch off or unplug computers, TVs and other electronic equipment. Leave one light switched on so you know when the power returns. Conserve your phone battery. Check on anyone vulnerable nearby. Use torches rather than candles.

NEVER use a barbecue, camping stove or portable generator indoors or in an enclosed space. They can produce carbon monoxide — an invisible, odourless gas that can kill.

Power back on?

Check that essential appliances are working normally. Switch equipment back on gradually. Reset clocks, timers and alarms. Recharge power banks and batteries. Restock anything you used. Be prepared for the power to go off again while repairs are completed.
